DIY: Kitchen Sink Unclogging, No One Likes A Smelly Sink!

Posted on Posted in Plumbing

Most clogs, toilet and kitchen sink alike, always feel like a bigger deal than they turn out to be. If you have a clogged kitchen sink, it is important to remember that there are several solutions to this issue.

Clogged Kitchen Sink

The first step to unclogging a kitchen sink drain is to have the correct tools at your disposal. Both a plunger and a drain snake are the ideal tools for improving your clogged situation. Other items, such as such as a bucket that fits under your sink, rubber gloves, and a good flashlight.

Check the disposal before you plunge, because a clogged garbage is one of the most common causes of a clogged drain. Get under the sink and make sure that there is nothing to unclog from the garbage disposal before you assess the rest. If you turn on your garbage disposal and hear a low humming, it is likely that it is jammed – no sound will mean that something is internally wrong with your disposal. Let it cool off, and press the reset button on the disposal.

If the issue does not lie with your garbage disposal, then try to use and check your plunger. Fill the kitchen sink with 3 to 4 inches of water to ensure that the plunger seals around the drain. Then, hold a wet rag tightly over the other drain opening (in double sinks), or use a basket strainer to seal it. Then, check your P-trap (you will need your bucket for this) and snake the line as the last step.

Remember: do not plunge or snake a drain if you have poured drain cleaners into the sink. These chemicals can cause moderate to severe burns if they happen to splash onto your skin. Use pipe cleaners only if the sink is draining slowly and is not completely clogged.

Most clogged kitchen sink situations can be prevented by just not abusing your drain. Through daily use, debris will build up in the drain pipes of the sink, which can lead to a nasty clog if not caught early or cleared regularly. It is not a complicated project to clear a clogged sink, although it does become a very involved process.

While your DIY methods may work temporarily and seem easy enough to accomplish, it is important to have an expert on the job.
